Open Letter in Support of the 87 Press

An open letter in support of the 87 press in the face of attacks.

13 min read

Editors’ note: New Socialist is happy to publish this open letter in opposition to the widespread intimidation and suppression of those who speak out in defence of Palestine, in the cultural sphere and elsewhere.

The 87 Press is a literary publisher based in London. It was founded in 2018 by a diverse collective of writers and artists. Its catalogue includes writing from a range of diasporic and marginalised subjects, including feminists, LGBTQ writers, those on the radical left, work translated from other languages, as well as indispensable books by female Palestinian poets. On 18 October 2023, the 87 Press published a statement in support of the Palestinian people, which calls for an unreserved and unequivocal solidarity with all Palestinians. It characterises Israel as a Settler Colonial state and refers to Israel’s treatment of the Indigenous Palestinian people as an Apartheid. It also calls out the ‘global military industrial complex that is seeking to profit off of Palestinian death’.

On 17 November 2023, The Jewish Chronicle published an article on the 87 Press and its Director (Azad Ashim Sharma), titled: ‘Poetry house that gets £100k grant backed Palestinian “liberation” in wake of Hamas terror’. The piece is a desperate attempt to impose a pre-existing narrative on ill-fitting material, presented as bait to the right-wing national media and a government on the lookout for sensationalist stories about pro-Palestinian ‘hate’. Its main target is the 18 October statement described above, at which point around 3,500 Palestinians had been killed by the Israeli army since the Hamas attacks 11 days before, which killed 1,200 people.

Centrally, the 87 Press statement advocates ‘for international law to be implemented as a rule for all nations and peoples without exception’. The Jewish Chronicle article presents this statement as if it were a veiled expression of support for Hamas. Social media posts and re-tweets (including from Azad’s personal accounts) are taken out of context and pasted together to support the insinuation that the press is a terrorist organisation. The reader is expected to fill in the blanks: Palestinians and their supporters are terrorists by default. They are guilty for what they do not say as well as for what they do.

We know this narrative. It is meant to distract from another, easier to substantiate one, which has to do with things that the Israeli government and its supporters do and say quite openly. A 9 November opinion piece in the Jewish Chronicle by a well-known peddler of Islamophobic conspiracy theories quite openly slanders the recent peace demonstrators in London as racist ‘mobs’ and advances the claim that Hamas is ‘worse than the Nazis’, the European fascist regime that oversaw the industrialised murder of over six million Jews. Meanwhile, Western bombs quite openly rain down on Palestinian homes, Western governments quite openly restrict freedom of speech, Western politicians quite openly crack down on protests, and Western cultural institutions quite openly penalise the discussion of basic historical truths. All attempts to talk about the incontrovertible and decades-long reality of occupation, colonial violence and discrimination in Palestine are maligned, Muslims are dehumanised, and historical debate is shut down.

The statement published by the 87 Press is a call for equality in the context of a reality that denies it. And the 87 Press have been working for equality for a long time now. The diversity of the 87 Press team itself, and its current call for submissions (‘exclusively’ open to ‘Black writers and writers of colour with an encouragement extended to Black women and women of colour’), shows how they embody their values. This work needs celebration, not vilification.

As poets, writers, artists, scholars, and readers, we also stand in support of the 87 Press’s right to make their public statement, free from attack, and on behalf of Palestinians who have come under such a relentless military onslaught. We stand against the eradication of Palestinian life and the erasure of Palestinian memory. We stand on the side of international law. As the 87 Press statement says: ‘we are on the side of life and meaningful peace’. Life means all life, and a meaningful peace is peace for everyone. In the context of this call for peace, we refuse that demands for Palestinian liberation have to be accompanied and prefaced by a condemnation of violence on ‘both sides’, and we refute the equation of that refusal with some sort of moral failing, when there’s a wilful blindness to the wider situation of oppression under which Palestinians strive to live. Here we refuse false equivalence and historical amnesia.

At a time when the UN calculates that more than 13,000 people have died in Gaza since 7 October, we echo the 87 Press’s demand for ‘a ceasefire and the opening of Gaza’s crossings to allow for the delivery of humanitarian aid’. We stand against the imposition of mass starvation and the bombing of innocent families. Finally, we stand with the 87 Press against any attempts to slander, bully, or otherwise malign the positive work they do to support anti-colonial poetry cultures in Britain and abroad. In Gaza, a child dies every 10 minutes.

In this time measured by death, we send these words in peace. We show solidarity with the emancipatory politics of the 87 Press by signing this letter, in the hopes that it may sustain them in what they do.
